TL;DR:
“To rank in ChatGPT search, you need to be known in external relevant sites as authority for your category, need to build topical authority, you need to optimize for Bing’s index (since ChatGPT retrieves from Bing, not Google), answer-first content structure formatting so AI can extract and cite it, build third-party brand authority through mentions on trusted sites, and maintain aggressive content freshness. Unlike traditional SEO focusing on ranking in 1st of SERP, ChatGPT ranking is about earning mentions and citations (getting your brand named or linked inside AI-generated answers)”
The above format is what exactly ChatGPT prefers to cite or mention. Direct, Factual, Extractable the simplest formula to rank in ChatGPT search.
- ChatGPT retrieves live results from Bing, not Google. 87% of ChatGPT citations align with Bing’s top results.
- ChatGPT ranking is about earning mentions and citations inside AI answers, not just ranking on SERP. Brand mentions have replaced backlinks as the key authority signal.
- 82.9% of citations come from third-party sources such as G2, Capterra, Reddit, press, YouTube. Off-site authority is non-negotiable.
- Structure content with answer-first formatting (BLUF/TL;DR) – ChatGPT scans 10–15% of a page and extracts passages, not full articles. Lead every section with the direct answer.
- Allow AI bots (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot) in your robots.txt, keep technical SEO clean, implement schema markup, and maintain consistent entity naming across all platforms.
- Fresh content wins – ChatGPT has cited pages with zero Google visibility purely because they were recent and relevant. Update pillar pages quarterly, listicles monthly.
ChatGPT is one of the GEO/AEO spaces with the maximum share of active users (As per OpenAI report in early 2026, ChatGPT has reached over 900 million weekly active users). Most of the B2B SaaS or Tech buyers are now searching in ChatGPT rather than in Google before buying.
We have found from our 50+ clients, the referral traffic from ChatGPT had a conversion rate around 10-15%. Whereas, the traditional Google or Bing organic traffic contributed around 1-1.5% in terms of conversions.
If your brand is still not cited or mentioned in ChatGPT searches, you’re sure to lose to your competitors and your potential customers. So, let’s fix this together by understanding deeply how the ChatGPT ranking system works.
How ChatGPT Search Actually Works?
Before knowing how to rank in ChatGPT, as a B2B Marketing leader, you need to know how ChatGPT search actually works.
If you understand how ChatGPT selects the sources it mentions or cites, you can be assured that no more guess work, just go through the algorithm.
I will break down the complex process into simple, and easy to understand steps in 5 different functions of ChatGPT.
1. ChatGPT’s Information Sources:
ChatGPT draws from two distinct information sources when generating responses, and understanding which one is active changes your entire optimization strategy.
Source 1- Parametric Knowledge (Training Data):
- ChatGPT uses GPTBot to read and learn billions of web pages, books, articles, forum discussions, and other texts across the internet as a pre-training phase.
- This training phase happens consistently around a specific period to keep the trained data updated.
- When your buyers ask for any query or question (in the form of prompt), ChatGPT answers immediately from the pre-trained data, rather than crawling the web — when the model has the answer.
The biggest disadvantage with parametric knowledge is most often mentions go unattributed. ChatGPT may recommend your brand without providing a citation link
Source 2 - Live Web Search via Bing RAG:
- When ChatGPT needs current information or when the user enables web search, the system performs real-time web crawl or search through Bing’s search API.
- According to Semrush’s 2026 clickstream analysis, ChatGPT enables its search feature on approximately 34.5% of queries as of February 2026.
- When search is active, Bing returns with answers and the source URLs in source of the result, and also in most cases, the brand name mentioned in the response with citations.
- This is the mode where your Bing rankings directly determine your ChatGPT visibility.
If you want trackable citation traffic, optimize for Bing, so your band will be visible as a source when ChatGPT does live web search in Bing.
Source 3 - Third-party or UGC Content platforms:
- OpenAI has direct content deals with news publishers (Le Monde, Associated Press, Prisa Media, Wired, Vogue, Axios, and broader publishers ecosystem, etc.) to feed relevant and industry data.
- When it comes to B2B SaaS or Tech companies, Reddit, Review sites (Gartner, G2, Capterra, etc), YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Third-party blog sites (like Techcrunch, Medium, Substack, etc.)
2. The Query Fan-Out Process: How ChatGPT Decodes Every Prompt
Now, what is a query fan-out? When a user submits a prompt to ChatGPT with web search enabled, the system does just run that single search query. It decodes the user’s prompt into multiple semantic sub-queries (4 or 6 queries with the same meaning), and this process is called query fan-out.
You can check this in Google chrome. After searching for a query in ChatGPT, just Inspect the page. After Inspect → select Network → select Preserve Log and Fetch/XHR → Finally, add Conversation in Filter → You’ll get the query fan-out for that search.
Query Fan-out or Fan-out query of ChatGPT helps in understanding the algorithm changes. Currently, the phrases of query Fan-out has been doubled (as per Peec).
Also, as per 7 Eagles research, ChatGPT pre-select brands in its query fan-out. So, understanding the query fan-out simplifies how ChatGPT works.
So, your content shouldn’t just be optimized for the user’s exact prompt. It needs to rank in Bing for the semantic nature of the prompt which ChatGPT generates behind the scenes (query fan-out).
This means comprehensive, semantic keywords focused content that covers a topic from multiple perspectives will capture more fan-out queries than a narrow, single keyword-focused page.
3. How ChatGPT Decides What to Cite?
If you want to rank your brand in ChatGPT, you need to know how ChatGPT decides what to cite. We have simplified this process into 5 stages as follows,
Stage 1 - Query Breakdown
ChatGPT breaks the user’s prompt into multiple sub-queries (as discussed in the query fan-out section) targeting different aspects of the question. Currently, the query fan-out is pre-selecting brands.
Stage 2 - Retrieval
The next step is retrieval of information from the web search. Each sub-query is sent to Bing’s search API, which returns ranked URLs (in 1st 2 pages of Bing) and retrieves the data along with the webpages cited in source.
Stage 3 - Passage Extraction
ChatGPT does not read full pages to understand the relevance of the web page. It actually employs snippet-based reading — just reading snippets, summaries, and HTML meta tags (Title, Meta description, H1, H2/H3) rather than processing the entire HTML of a document.
It extracts specific chunks of text that directly answer portions of the query. When it comes to ChatGPT SEO,the fundamental optimization has shifted from the page to the passage.
Stage 4 - Synthesis
Once the relevant text or content is extracted from multiple sources, it synthesizes to create a natural answer. The model combines extracted passages from multiple sources into a unique, reasonable response, along with credits to the original sources.
Stage 5 - Citation Attachment
The answers generated by ChatGPT are from different sources that could solve the intent of the prompts. In most cases, either it cites the brand or website name of the source in the answer generated, or it is just attached under “sources” at the end of the answer. So, the reader can be assured that the answer is never guessed, it is sourced.
4. Optimize for Bing, not just for Google
In the past two decades, SEO was around working for Google ranking, and those days are gone. The searches and decisions are made through LLMs (AI search engines) like ChatGPT. The key source of ChatGPT is Bing, not Google, as it’s confirmed by OpenAI that the only third party it looks at is bing.
When comparing a “Best project management tool” query in Google fan-out results versus Bing fan-out results, Bing rankings were matching the ChatGPT mentions, but Google ranking weren’t matched. Even a study from Seer Interactive has found that 87% of ChatGPT-cited URLs align with Bing’s top results.
28% of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages have zero Google organic visibility. In short, the pages that are cited as sources in ChatGPT are ranking in Bing at maximum, but not all the time in Google.
The simple recommendation on how to rank in ChatGPT is to rank or optimize for Bing search engine. It doesn’t mean ranking in Google has nothing to do with ChatGPT mentions, both Bing and Google prioritize authority sites. So, making sure your site is authoritative— rest assured to rank in every LLM search.
How to Rank in ChatGPT? 15 Strategy to win the competition
Step 1: Don’t Block ChatGPT Bots in Robots.txt
Any quality content is unknown if your web page is not crawled by ChatGPT Bots. So, on priority you need to confirm that AI crawlers can read or crawl all the critical web page content.
Three specific bots must have access:
- GPTBot – OpenAI’s general-purpose web crawler that gathers training data
- OAI-SearchBot – The bot that powers ChatGPT’s real-time web search
- ChatGPT-User – The bot that acts when a user directly browses via ChatGPT
Many websites block these bots.
Check your robots.txt file immediately. If you see any Disallow rules targeting these user agents, remove them. Here is the exact robots.txt configuration you need to have,
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
User-agent: Bingbot
Allow: /
Additional Recommendation is to have an LLMS.txt file with critical web pages and the XML sitemap. Same as Robots.txt, LLMS.txt helps these AI bots like chatGPT to crawl the web pages. It helps the readiness or visibility of the web pages by major AI search engines.
Step 2 - Keep all Technical SEO Hygienes clean
- Avoid JavaScript-heavy Pages – Run a JavaScript rendering test to diagnose the heaviness of the JS files. Disable JavaScript in your browser and load your key pages. If content disappears, AI crawlers cannot see it either, as AI crawlers prefer clean HTML pages over JS-heavy pages.
- Site Architecture and Internal Linking – Keep your BoFU or commercial intent pages to reach in three clicks from any web page, and Site architecture helps in this. Have multiple sub-directories around your product feature and build all the pillar-cluster mapping.
- Optimize XML Sitemap – Make sure all the critical web pages are indexed in both Google and Bing, and are available in XML sitemap. Finally, make sure all the sitemaps are submitted to both Google search console (GSC), and Bing Webmaster Tool (BWT).
- Manual Indexing Request – If any critical web pages are not indexed, you do manual “Request indexing” in Google search console, and IndexNow in Bing webmaster tool for instant indexing.
- Resolve Redirects and Broken links – Apart from this, make sure all the internal links are redirecting or returned as 404. Keep all the critical URLs free from server errors (5xx).
- Core Web Vitals – Same as traditional search engines, Core web vitals too plays a crucial role in citing a web page in source or mentions. Focus to keep LCP (Largest Contentful paint) or loading speed between 2 – 2.5 Seconds.
You can definitely check out our technical SEO checklist to keep your website technical SEO error free
Step 3: Structure Content for AI Extraction.
1. Answer Directly
ChatGPT does not read content the way humans do, it scans 10-15% of the web page to understand the intent of the web page. It scans for extractable answers or specific passages that directly answer the user’s prompt or query. Answer-first content structure or format is the best way for extractable answers.
Your content structure determines whether you earn a citation or get passed over for a competitor whose content was easier to parse.
2. The BLUF Method (Bottom Line Up Front) or TL;DR
As discussed in the first portion of this topic, you need to answer directly to the user query in the first portion of the content. This has become the most impactful content formatting change you should make to rank or cite in ChatGPT.
Using a TL;DR format to describe the nudge of the complete article where the user and the chatGPT bot understand the directly relevant answer for the query.
Lead every sub-headers (H2/H3/H4), not just your introduction with a direct, concise answer in 40-60 words. Place the most important information in the first 20% of each section.
ChatGPT’s retrieval system favors content that provides clear, extractable answers in the opening paragraph of each section. If the AI has to read 500 words of contextual buildup to find the answer, it moves on to a competitor whose page leads with the answer.
Practical before/after example (Use this for image)
Before (traditional marketing content): > “In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, businesses of all sizes are recognizing the importance of customer relationship management systems. With so many options available, choosing the right platform can feel overwhelming. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about selecting a CRM that fits your unique needs…”
After (ChatGPT-optimized content): > “The best CRM for small businesses in 2026 is HubSpot CRM (free tier), followed by Pipedrive ($14.90/mo) and Zoho CRM ($14/mo). HubSpot leads for small teams because it offers free contact management, email tracking, and pipeline management for up to 1,000,000 contacts with no credit card required.”
From the above image, the second version is immediately extractable. ChatGPT can lift that passage verbatim as a citation. The first version provides no extractable answer within its first 50 words.
3. Content Formats That Earn Citations
Here is the content formats that consistently earn citations,
- Comparison tables – A structured data that machines read effortlessly
- Step-by-step guides – Use Step1, Step 2, Step 3., when the sub-header/header is “How to” query.
- Table of Content – Like traditional SEO, table of content gives the skeletal view of the web page, and its outline for ChatGPT bots.
- Glossaries – ChatGPT cites Wikipedia for 47.9% of its top-10 citations according to Profound’s citation analysis; When you have multiple glossaries around your industry, it’s a high chance to replace wikipedia for definitions in your niche.
- Original research with data – Adding statistic in each article, and publishing research articles in your website improved visibility by up to 40%
- FAQ sections – It mirrors natural language prompts and directly helps in promoting multiple semantic questions around the main topic.
Pros vs. Cons comparisons – This serves decision-making queries directly
Step 4: Keep HTML Meta Tags Optimized with Semantic keywords
Make sure you optimize the HTML meta tags for the semantic keywords. The basic HTMLs that Bing and ChatGPT both look at are Title Tag, Meta Description, URL, H1 (Header Tag), 1st H2 (Sub-header), and FAQs.
One of the most important bing ranking signals is having the exact-match keyword in the title tag. Example, If your target query is “best project management software for remote teams,” that exact phrase should appear in your title tag.
Here is the usage that you can follow to rank in sources of ChatGPT,
- Title Tag and H1 – Start with the exact primary keyword.
- Meta Description – Explain the Primary keyword with semantic meaning.
- H2/H2 (Sub-headers) – Primary and other semantic Keywords.
- FAQs – All the relevant questions related to primary and semantic keywords.
- URL – Primary Keyword.
Step 5: Build Entity-First with same relevancy
How to Build Your Entity Profile?
- Your brand needs to be recognizable as a unique entity across the web (without many different identities for your brand).
- This means maintaining consistent brand naming across every online property. If you are called “7Eagles” on your website, “Seven Eagles” on LinkedIn, and “7 Eagles SEO” in a guest post, you are fragmenting your entity signal.
- Implement Organization schema on your website with sameAs links that connect your website, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, and other profiles into a unified entity.
- Maintain the same description (meaning) across every third party platforms like LinkedIn, X, YouTube, G2, Capterra, Gartner, Clutch, Upcity, etc.
- In all the reviews or third-party sites, make sure you try to either include all features of your product/service or create separate pages for specific products (when each feature is coined as a product).
- Maintain a clear “About” page and “Press” page with structured facts that AI can reference for entity resolution.
- If eligible, establish a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry mentioning your brand as “Best [Brand] for Project Management Tools for [Industry]. These serve as anchor points for entity recognition across all LLMs.
- Same as Wikipedia, for any third party mentions (PR or review sites), keep mentioning your brand as “Best [Brand] for Project Management Tools for [Industry]. This helps ChatGPT query fan-out to pre-select your brand.
Step 6: Build Topical Authority
Same as Google and other AI search engines, ChatGPT prefers a website on its topical depth.
Topical authority is the process of creating supporting clusters around the pillar page and BoFU or Product page, followed by silo-structing them for increasing the authority around the pillar topic for the entity.
In simple terms, ranking in ChatGPT is not about single pages—it is about topical authority built through interconnected content clusters with the pillar content.
Here is how you can build topical authority for B2B SaaS and Fintech,
- Build a pillar page for each core topic or product’s feature— this could be a comprehensive guide.
- Pillar page is not your product page, it should be separate and available in the menu.
- Then, support all the pillar pages by detailed cluster pages that each answer a single question end-to-end.
- Link them together using relevant anchors text (it should be descriptive of the linkedin web page relevancy)
- When ChatGPT’s retrieval system encounters queries on any sub-topic in your cluster, your domain becomes a recurring candidate source.
The pillar-cluster approach builds topical depthness leads to authority in that topic. It helps ChatGPT’s retrieval system to prefer your domain across multiple fan-out queries.
Step 7: Keep your web page Content Fresh
Like every LLM or AI search engine, ChatGPT has given advantage to updated content.
Ahrefs’ study found that ChatGPT prefers the fresh content among all AI platforms. The study documented specific examples of pages with zero traditional search visibility — no Google rankings, no organic traffic — being cited thousands of times by ChatGPT simply because they were fresh and relevant.
So, keeping your content fresh is the highest chance of getting cited in ChatGPT, even if you’re not ranked in Google or Bing SERP. But, Fresh doesn’t mean just changing title, or H1 or published date.
Fresh content is replacing outdated content, new value addition to the web pages, replacing the visual assets. Faking freshness can be harmful to your SEO and GEO performance.
Here are type of web page that has to be updated or fresh content,
- “Best of” listicles: Monthly add/remove entries, update pricing, refresh publication dates. Don’t have the same list of brands for years.
- Pillar guides and frameworks: Quarterly refresh statistics, add new sections, update examples, tools, statistics, and images.
- How-to tutorials: Quarterly update for tool changes, add new screenshots, add new case studies.
- Original research and data posts: Refresh datasets, re-run analyses, add new findings every half-yearly.
Glossaries and definitions: Add new terms, refine existing definitions every 6 months once.
Step 8: Build Off-Site Authority Through Brand Mentions
ChatGPT SEO differs from traditional SEO in many ways, and brand mentions is one of them. Backlinks as per the traditional SEO are replaced by brand mentions in terms of GEO or AEO or LLMO.
As per Discoveredlabs, 82.9% of ChatGPT citations come from third-party sources and not from the brand’s own website. Status Labs data further found that 67% of ChatGPT citations are “dead citations” pointing to third-party content that brands cannot directly control.
Here are the multiple Off-page SEO strategy that helps to promote your brand’s citation in ChatGPT multifolds,
1. Industry listicles and “best of” posts.
Find authoritative sites in your space that have not yet published a “best of” post for your category. Pitch the other brands on creating the content share keyword research showing the search volume opportunity, and ask for brand exchange. When the content is created organically with your brand included, it carries far more citation weight. Before reaching to authoritative sites, make sure you have a higher DR (Domain Rating).
2. Third-party review platforms.
G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and industry-specific review sites are heavily cited by ChatGPT. For SaaS companies, these review sites are pre-selected by the ChatGPT query fan-out. These review sites are 2nd source of citation in ChatGPT for product business like Fintech and SaaS.
3. Reddit and community presence.
Reddit is also one of ChatGPT’s most-cited sources for product recommendations as LLMs like ChatGPT prefers UGC contents from these communities. Audit search in ChatGPT as “Best [your category]” or “Best [your category] for [industry]”, you’ll get only selected Sub-reddits cited as sources. Work on those sub-reddits, and also try to improve your karma points.
4. Guest Posting.
Guest post is the easy option to build referring domains from authoritative and trustworthy websites of your relevant niche. Outreaching authority website in your niche by finding,
- Content or keyword gap – To write new content to add more traffic to your website.
- Outdated contents – To refresh the content that helps ranking in both Google and AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.
- Fixing Redirect and Broken links
Do competitor research with tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush to find the referring domains of your competitors. Filter the websites that are relevant with high organic traffic in the target country, not hit by core updates, and higher DA or DR.
Note: Just don’t select any website only by DA or DR. It’s relevancy, organic traffic, domain age matters a lot.
If you’re looking for a partner to outreach and fix the link building gap, you can reach us for Link Building Services for your SaaS or Fintech business.
5. Expert Content in Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit
Position your thought leader (especially founder) as subject matter expert with continued content creation in Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit or any other forum. These when found valuable, there is a high chance to quote your content either as content or screenshot and sharing source to your website.
6. Wikipedia and Wikidata.
If your brand meets Wikipedia’s notability criteria, establishing an entry creates a foundational entity reference. Wikipedia accounted for 47.9% of ChatGPT’s top-10 cited sources in Profound’s analysis with 30,000 prompts.
7. Digital PR and press mentions
Pitch original research, data, and insights to journalists or PR websites. Every press mention on a high-authority site increases your brand’s signal strength across both Bing and ChatGPT.
Don’t just invest in PR on “[brand] has raised [x Million USD] in Series A round”, rather establish in PR as “[Brand] is the best [your category] for [industry]”. Build such PR and external citations as much as possible for your brands are well known to LLM as the top brand.
8. Prioritize Social signals
Bing and ChatGPT directly consider social engagement more than Google. Content that performs well on LinkedIn, gets shared on X, or generates discussion tends to rank better on Bing.
Step 9: Optimize Your YouTube Presence
YouTube optimization has become one of the most cited sources for ranking in ChatGPT.
In Ahrefs’ analysis of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions and mention impressions showed the strongest correlation with ChatGPT visibility than any other factors.
Why does YouTube matter so much for ChatGPT ranking? Two reasons
YouTube is LLM training data:
- The New York Times reported that OpenAI’s GPT-4 model was trained on over one million hours of YouTube transcriptions.
- When your brand gets mentioned in YouTube videos, those mentions are encoded into the model’s weights.
- Every video review, tutorial mention, or comparison that names your brand strengthens your parametric presence.
LLMs prefer to retrieve YouTube for video-relevant queries:
- Since LLMs cannot generate video content, they retrieve and recommend YouTube videos when the prompt demands it (especially the How to prompt, SaaS Product comparisons, and Product review). This creates an additional citation pathway.
How to Increase Mentions with YouTube?
- Publish consistently on your own YouTube channel covering topics in your expertise area.
- Create content valuable enough that other YouTubers reference and mention it.
- Also create content on “Best [Your category] tool for [Indurtry]”, “Brand A vs [your brand] Comparison”, “[Competitor] Product review”, “How to Implement”, “How to integrate”, and more
- Collaborate with industry creators for brand mentions in their videos.
- Every content you create should be insightful with more industry data, hacks— this establishes your website as a thought leader, and it increases returning subscribers.
- Optimize your YouTube’s Title, Description, Thumbnail, Category, etc with semantic keywords. So, it helps ChatGPT to retrieve and cite your YouTube channel and your brand.
- Lastly, link your blog in YouTube description, and YouTube video embedded in your website content.
If you are someone who is looking for a hand to support to grow your YouTube channel, then you can block our calendar for YouTube SEO Services.
Step 10: Implement Schema Markup for AI Readability
Schema markup serves a dual purpose on ranking in ChatGPT Search. It helps Bing’s crawler understand your content structure, and it reduces uncertainty in entity identification.
As Microsoft’s AI search optimization blog explains, AI assistants parse content into smaller structured pieces. Clear metadata, schema markup, and organized content make your pages more likely to be selected.
Here are the important schema you need to implement
- FAQPage schema – Helps ChatGPT to crawl and retrieve the FAQs in the page.
- Organization schema – Establishes your brand as a recognized entity with sameAs links connecting all web properties.
- Product/SoftwareApplication schema – Recommend for every product page of SaaS or FinTech or any other Product brands. This helps the brand to be cited or mentioned in comparison and recommendation queries. Include features, pricing model, and integration details.
- HowTo schema – For every “how to” web pages you need to implement this schema
Article schema – For every blog or article you need this Schema with clear publisher information, publication date, and last-modified date to support freshness signals.
Step 11: Discover Dark Queries (Zero-Volume AI Prompts)
“Dark queries” are the prompts people type into ChatGPT that have zero search volume in traditional keyword research tools.
As the prompts in ChatGPT are usually longer, more conversational, more specific, and often include constraints that traditional search queries never would.
Example of a traditional keyword: “best CRM software” Example of a dark query: “What is the best CRM for a 12-person sales team that integrates with Slack and costs under $50 per user per month and has good mobile app reviews?”
Why do you need to understand the Dark queries? It helps you to build the content semantically for the prompts, so you can find or validate why your brand is either mentioned or not mentioned.
How to Discover Dark Queries?
- Manual ChatGPT Testing
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask. Vary the specificity, include constraints (budget, team size, integrations), and test both simple and nuanced versions. Document the results. Apart from checking the mentions in the answer, look at the source, whether your brand URL is cited.
- Fan-Out Query Extraction
Using Chrome DevTools’ network tab, you can observe the actual sub-queries ChatGPT sends to Bing when processing a prompt. This reveals the exact queries your content needs to rank for (as bing prefers exact query match with Title and descriptions)
- Customer Support and Sales Call Questions
Your customer support tickets, sales call transcripts, and onboarding questions contain the exact natural language your buyers use. These are dark query goldmines. You either have to create a web page or FAQ within the existing page. This is something we prioritize at 7 Eagles with our customers to collect the customer language queries.
- Community Monitoring
Check the questions that get more replies in Reddit, Quora, any industry-specific forums. These questions can also be asked by your target customer. These dark queries should be answered at any cost in your website.
Step 12: Strengthen E-E-A-T Signals for AI Trust
How to Improve E-E-A-T that helps to rank in ChatGPT?
- Publish content under named authors with real credentials and publicly visible expertise.
- The author building thought leadership in Twitter or LinkedIn or Instagram or YouTube will build experience and expertise for the author. Apart from this, it also adds search volume for the author.
- Create author pages with publication history, speaking appearances, and external citations and mentions.
- Implement author schema with sameAs links to LinkedIn profiles and other social media links.
- Include primary source references and original data in every piece.
- Get your experts quoted in external publications to build author-level entity recognition.
- Display industry certifications, awards, and partnerships prominently.
- Earn links or mentions for your author and brand only from the trustable and authoritative websites.
Step 13: Prioritize User Engagement
One of the underrated ranking factors for ranking in ChatGPT is better user experience or user signals.
What are considered to be user signals or engagement?
- Low bounce rate
- Higher session time or engagement time
- Scroll depth or dwell time.
- Travelling from page to page using internal links
- Submitting Lead form or Downloading lead magnet or Booking a Demo
One more important signal as per Google is “last longest click”, which demonstrates a user starts searching about a query after they read through your article for the same query— the user is satisfied.
These signals are prioritized by LLMs for ranking and that’s the reason a comprehensive article should cover all the aspects of the query.
For example, if someone searches for “SaaS SEO”, the article should cover SaaS SEO strategy, What are the components for SaaS SEO, What are the important SaaS SEO Tools, etc,.
Step 14: Create Citation-worth Contents
Answer or Generative engines cite what looks like evidence such as research articles, statistics, playbooks from authoritative websites. These contents are worth citations, as LLMs read and prefer to cite these articles.
Here are the examples of creating citation-worthy articles,
- Annual benchmark report – “State of [Your Industry] 2026: Data from X Companies”
- Comprehensive glossary – “The Complete [Industry] Glossary: 200+ Terms Defined”
- Original research article – “[Industry] Trends: What 1,000 Professionals Say”
- Buyer’s guide – “How to Choose [Product Category]: The Definitive Framework”
- Checklists – “10 [Feature] Checklist before Implementing [Product]”
Each asset should follow these structure principles,
- Every key claim is self-contained and quotable.
- Methodology is clearly stated; data is dated and versioned.
- Statistics appear in callout boxes or tables for easy extraction.
- URLs are stable and canonical.
Step 15: Track, Measure, and Iterate Your ChatGPT Visibility
Here are four key metrics you need to measure,
- Citation Frequency – This is the primary KPI. It calculates how often your brand or specific pages appear across the tracked queries.
- Citation Position – Not all citations carry equal weightage, position of the citation matters.
- Bran mentioned as Top recommendation – Very High weightage
- Mid-list mention – Mid to High weightage
- Just as a source – Low weightage.
- Sentiment Quality – Whether mentions are accurate, positive, and positioned correctly relative to your competitive positioning.
- Conversion Impact – Whether ChatGPT referral traffic (visible in GA4 as chatgpt.com referrals) converts into leads, signups, or revenue.
How to Track AI Visibility for my Brand
- Manual Tracking Method (Free):
- Ask ChatGPT 15-20 questions your target customers would ask.
- Document which brands appear, in what context, and whether citations link to your pages.
- Track changes over time.
- This takes 2-3 hours per week but provides ground-truth data no tool can replicate.
- AI Visibility Tools:
The next option is buying any of the best AI visibility tools available in the market. This can help you to,
- Add all the important prompts (25 prompts can be tracked in starter plan for any tools)
- You can check the sentimental analysis against your competitors and your brand’s position against competitors for every prompt.
- Using Log File:
You can also use a Log file to analyze what AI bot has crawled your web pages. Like the number of times each bot has crawled any web page. This gives you the idea of which pages get hit by AI bots, and the number of times it visits.
The SEO team of 7 Eagles has automated the log file into a dashboard to fetch this details on daily or weekly frequency with web page wise filter. If you need one, you can definitely reach us.
ChatGPT Pre-Selects Brands Before Searching the Web
Recently, we have published a research article on ChatGPT pre-selects brands in its query fan-out. As a marketer, finding the query fan-out for all the prompts (especially commercial) from Google DevTool is a critical thing.
ChatGPT’s responses are probabilistic, not deterministic. Search Engine Land’s analysis of repeated ChatGPT runs found that across 100 responses to the same prompt, ChatGPT mentions an average of 44 different brands, but a core group of “dominant” brands appears far more frequently than others.
This means you cannot rank in ChatGPT the way you rank in Google. But you can increase your brand’s mention probability.
What determines brand mention probability?
Layer 1: Training Data Patterns.
- If your brand was frequently mentioned alongside specific topics, products, or use cases in the data ChatGPT was trained on, the model has a structural bias toward including you.
- This is why established brands with years of web presence tend to dominate ChatGPT recommendations.
Layer 2: Real-Time Retrieval Signals.
- When web search is active, Bing rankings and the content of top-ranking pages directly shape which brands get mentioned.
- If authoritative third-party sites (Forbes, G2, industry publications) mention your brand in their Bing-ranked articles, ChatGPT picks up those mentions and incorporates them.
Here’s what you have to do to make sure your brand is pre-selected in a query fan-out?
As a B2B marketer, you need to build brand presence across both layers (Training data and Real-time retrieval data) simultaneously.
Training data influence is a long-term game (it compounds as new model versions are trained on more recent web data). Bing retrieval influence is a medium-term game where Bing SEO and third-party mention building produce results within 3-6 months.
According to Search Engine Land’s study, 21% of mentioned brands reach “dominant” status in niche categories compared to just 7% in competitive categories.
This means the more specific your positioning, the higher your probability of being ChatGPT’s go-to recommendation.
A company known as “the best accounting software for commercial real estate companies” will dominate that niche prompt far more consistently than a company trying to be “the best accounting software.”
How to Rank in ChatGPT for B2B SaaS Companies?
1. Run an AI Visibility Audit:
- Test 15-20 buyer queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
- Especially BoFU queries (“best CRM for remote teams”), integration queries (“CRM that integrates with Slack”), pricing queries (“project management tools under $20/user”), feature queries (“help desk with AI routing”), and competitor comparison queries (“HubSpot vs Pipedrive”).
- Document which brands appear and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly.
2. Fix Entity Clarity Across Every Platform:
- Ensure your brand name, product category, and ICP description are identical across your website, G2, Capterra, LinkedIn, and Crunchbase.
- Implement Organization schema with sameAs links connecting all profiles.
- In most cases, for any commercial query related to B2B SaaS, third-party sites (G2, Capterra, Gartner) are cited in the sources. Even the query fan-out pre-selects G2, Capterra, and Gartner.
3. Dominate Review Platforms:
- Fully complete G2 and Capterra profiles, maintain the brand entity as well the common messaging.
- Your reviews, description, should mention your brand as “Best [your category]”, and “Best [your category] for [industry]”
- Actively solicit recent reviews, as recency matters more than volume.
- Expand to TrustRadius, Gartner Peer Insights, and vertical-specific review sites.
- Review platforms alone can boost citation rates regardless of what you have done on your website.
4. Build Comparison and "Best Of" Content in Website and YouTube:
You should create BoFU pages which have a higher possibility of getting cited in ChatGPT if it’s optimized in both website and YouTube. Here are the following content types you need to cover,
- Create “best of” category listicles
- “vs.” comparison pages with structured HTML tables,
- Alternatives pages.
- Integration guides.
- Use 120-180 word sections between headings, and answer the query in the first 40-60 words of every section.
- Use YouTube description to link to the website, and web page to embed the YouTube video.
5. Work on Reddit, Quora, Press Release, LinkedIn, Substack, Slack Communities, etc,.
- Reddit is one among the most-cited B2B SaaS domains in ChatGPT. There is a high chance if your brand is mentioned as a suggestion for commercial intent questions.
- It prefers a couple of sub-reddits such as r/saas, r/crm, etc,. Make sure you’re active in either posting (when you have karma points more than 1000) or comment for relevant questions with experience-based answers.
- Work on Industry publications such as TechCrunch, SaaStr, Forbes Tech. Because these websites are crawled by ChatGPT bots and consider as authority sites.
- To be pre-selected in ChatGPT’s query fan-out, get mentioned in analyst reports such as Gartner, Forrester, etc.
- LinkedIn articles, and Product Hunt can also get your brands mentioned or cited in ChatGPT answers.
6. Build Topical Authority:
- The most important factor of ranking your SaaS product in ChatGPT is by building Topical authority or depthness around your product pillar features.
- Your product features are the high-intent commercial page, and has higher conversion rates.
- Select 3-4 important features, and it’s a pillar topic. For example, for ‘Customer Engagement Platform’, “What is Customer Engagement” becomes the Pillar content.
- Build Pillar-cluster topical depthness, so ChatGPT gets to know your brand as authoritative for the same topic.
7. Keep your Contents Refreshed
- The outdated content or content decay can directly impact your visibility in ChatGPT. These LLMs (especially ChatGPT) prefer web pages with fresh content such as new statistics, new comparison, etc,.
- Always update your alternatives, brand A vs Brand B comparison pages, statistics, checklists, and commercial pages.
- Keeping these pages updated is preferred to be mentioned in ChatGPT answers.
8. Optimize Technical Documentation:
- Structure API docs and knowledge base with clear H2/H3 headings matching developer queries.
- Include code examples, implementation FAQs, and comparison content.
- Ensure docs are server-side rendered so AI crawlers can index them.

- Stack Overflow (for API-related questions).
- LinkedIn articles on regulatory topics, and FinTech Substack newsletters (Fintech Takes, The Fintech Blueprint).
- Getting referenced in these newsletters builds training for ChatGPT.
7. Handle the YMYL Freshness Paradox:
- FinTech content goes stale faster than generic SaaS.
- Update pricing/fee comparisons monthly, regulatory guides quarterly (or immediately when rules change), API docs continuously with IndexNow (in Bing Webmaster tool), and benchmarks semi-annually.
- Include visible “Last updated” timestamps on every page — this alone drives 30% more citations (Averi AI, 2026).

What are the Common Mistakes of ChatGPT Optimization?
1. Blocking AI bots in robots.txt.
If GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot is blocked, ChatGPT physically cannot access your content. Audit quarterly.
2. Heavy JavaScript rendering without Server Side Rendering.
AI crawlers cannot execute JavaScript. If your content loads dynamically, it is invisible. So, avoid JavaScript bulky, and have a clear HTML structure for better rendering.
3. Ignoring Bing entirely.
Most of the SaaS or B2B or FinTech companies ignore Bing completely. But. 87% of ChatGPT citations align with Bing rankings and avoiding Bing optimization eliminates your primary pathway to ChatGPT visibility.
4. Publishing only on your own domain.
With 82.9% of ChatGPT citations coming from third-party sources, a website-only content strategy leaves the most impactful citation channel untouched.
Apart from just optimizing your website, you need to focus on Reddit, Review sites like G2, Capterra, Gartner, LinkedIn pulse, and communities.
5. Faking freshness.
Changing publish dates without substantive content updates. ChatGPT may detect metadata changes that do not correspond to content changes, and this erodes trust rather than building it.
6. Generic brand naming.
If your brand name is generic or easily confused with other entities, ChatGPT cannot accurately associate information with your company. A distinctive, searchable brand name consistently used across the web is a foundational requirement.

Topical Authority, Brand Entity, Domain Age, AI-Friendly Content structure, freshness, third-party leverage(G2, Capterra, etc), mention in communities (Reddit, LinkedIn, Slack, etc), and brand mentions across trusted sources are all the reasons behind chatGPT citing a brand.

Backlinks help indirectly by improving your Bing rankings and overall domain authority. However, brand mentions across trusted sources are a stronger predictor of ChatGPT citations than backlinks alone. The Search Engine Journal study found referring domains to be the strongest predictor — but the signal is web-wide mention breadth, not just traditional link equity.
What is the difference between a ChatGPT citation and a brand mention?
A citation is a clickable link to a specific URL. A brand mention is when ChatGPT names your brand in its response without necessarily linking to your site. Both mentions and citations are valuable if the mention comes with a hyper link, as it builds visibility as well as link to your website.
